Generally speaking, intentional walks are a bad thing. This is unless an elite hitter is up to bat and there's runners on second and third, according to a book co-authored by Michael Lichtman.  Lichtman, also a writer for the Hardball Times, takes a further look at the effectiveness of this strategy by using statistics.
