In the Hardball Times' report of yesterday's action, a very surprising statistic came up. The Atlanta Braves, with their 3-2 loss to the Nationals Wednesday, went to 1-9 on the season in games decided by 2 runs or less. Similar early season struggles in close games occured with the Cubs last year, and it was mostly because of poor relief pitching. If one believes in the sabermetric teachings of Bill James that there's no such thing as timely hitting, then the blame for Atlanta's struggles must be placed on poor pitching.
