Washington Nationals' Nick Johnson is batting .216 through the first month of the season but is putting together an impressive April. How is this possible? Because a player's skills are more important than just results. Johnson is hitting line drives 28% of the time, which should make his average in the high .300s.
i like to see stuff like this. a player's average isn't always a good indicator of how well they're hitting the ball. sometimes they just hit the ball to the wrong place at the wrong time, but it's a well hit. the same thing is happening with my brother on his high school team. he's killing the ball but most of them end up being just short of the fence or line outs to the infielders.
