Long-time head case Barry Zito was demoted to the bullpen today, making the Giants pitcher the most expensive middle reliever in MLB history. The Giants gave Zito a $126 million contract and called him the new face of the franchise in December 2006. He currently has a 7.53 ERA; a 1.95 WHIP and an 11:15 K/WALK ratio.

Worth and things

I think worth is only what you make it. Arguably nobody in any major sport is worth what it is they are paid. But, at the time, I really liked the signing of Zito. Maybe not for the vast amount of money they paid, but it seemed like a flyball pitcher in San Francisco's park was a good fit.

But with his decreased velocity, Zito had to be relegated to the bullpen. You can't just let him, day-in and day-out get shelled. It's demoralizing for him, and more importantly, his team. Every fifth day they know that they have to score 8 or more runs.

So, it's unfortunate for the Giants and their fans, but it's a necessary move.

How does a pitcher with that much talent fall so hard?

. . . and the 200+ innings he gave the A's, but the reality is that he was never worth what the Giants gave him. Just another reason why Magowan has to be one of the most overrated GMs in the game. The reality is that you DO NOT put your supposed ace in the bullpen. Let him work it out on the mound. It is one month into the season, people.
