On this site, the common theme among closers is that they are largely beneficiaries of quality team play. There's a reason why Francisco Rodriguez is approaching the record for most saves in a season, and that's because of the Angels' strong starting pitching and consistent offense. Beyond the Box Score takes this argument a step further.
By breaking down K-Rod's stats, they argue that he is having the worst season of his career. And, after looking at their piece, I agree. Rodriguez is striking out less players per nine innings, walking more per nine and his xFIP is higher than it has ever been. And while these statistics are good, a huge potential problem for Rodriguez as he moves into the free agent market is that his fastball velocity has dropped from 94.8 in 2006 MPH to 91.8 MPH this season. This, obviously, is something to keep an eye on.
