I guess being way out of the NL West race, which doesn't have a dominant team, gives the Padres clearance to experiment with new strategies. In particular, San Diego has switched to a six-man rotation in the attempt to incorporate young pitchers Wade LeBlanc and Wayne Greer into the starting rotation without removing anyone.
Well, except for Brett Tomko, who was released Sunday along with Tadahito Iguchi. For more information about each young pitchers' stats, head over this link, which explains why the Padres will do this in addition to what the future holds for their starting rotation.
