Both the Yankees' Phil Hughes and Humberto Contreras will play in the Arizona Fall League, according to New York pitching coordinator and Hughes himself. The purpose of this extra work (as the minor league seasons begin to end for many teams, with the playoffs beginning is innings. MORE.
Contreras is well below Hughes in innings, so his presence in Arizona seems to be rather obvious. And since Hughes has only accumulated 70 innings so far this season (because of injuries), he needs additional work if he wants to stretch out his arm to possibly start for the Yankees in 2009. Reports are that Ian Kennedy is also a candidate to pitch in the Arizona Fall League, so stay tuned for news on that front. Meanwhile, Hughes is already locked in, and excited to go pitch more in the hot sun of Arizona.
