We found an interesting article on our new favorite website, The Book. It talks about the actions of the Pirates front office leading up to the trade deadline. Basically, they were committed to sending Jason Bay to Boston for a steep return price. If that didn't happen, they would walk. And, as everyone now knows, the trade did happen, and Pittsburgh received four prospects (three of which played in the team's weekend series against the Cubs. The more interesting thing, at least in our opinion, is that the Pirates seem to be rather content to let their first-round draft pick (No. 2 overall) Pedro Alvarez go unsigned and take the compensatory No. 3 pick next year. The reason, simply put, is that they can't afford the price Alvarez is asking, nor could they afford to keep (in the interest in the long-term prospects of the team) Jason Bay or Xavier Nady.
