Joe Posnanski wrote an interesting blog post the other day. In this, he says that there's only three types of pitchers who are successful in the major leagues. Power pitchers who strike out a lot of hitters, pitchers who have a lot of downward movement that force a lot of ground balls and those who are a combination of the two. Based on this idea, Posnanski concocted a formula that can specifically be seen on his blog. But, the top 10 pitchers, according to the formula are, in order: Brandon Webb, Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Derek Lowe, Mike Mussina, Dan Haren, Tim Hudson, James Shields, Andy Pettitte and Jesse Litsch. Now obviously, this leaves out many big name, successful pitchers (CC Sabathia and Johan Santana just to name a few), but it's an interesting read none-the-less.
