It took over a month, but the Pirates finally reached a contract agreement with the second pick of the 2008 draft, third baseman Pedro Alvarez from Vanderbilt. Even though a deal was reached back in August, it was not finalized until Monday because of a grievance filed by the player's union.
Not surprisingly, super-agent Scott Boras was involved in this mess, which started because the union claimed that Major League Baseball approved Alvarez's initial contract after the mandatory deadline. The confusion is finally settled, and Alvarez can finally go buy that Hummer he's been looking at for a month, because his contract is worth a guaranteed $6.4 million.
Phil Hughes was recalled by the Yankees on Saturday and the young right-hander could start for New York as soon as Wednesday, when the Yankees host the Chicago White Sox. Hughes struck out 12 batters to help the Yankees Triple A affiliate win the International League championship on Friday.
David Price was recalled by the Rays Friday to give the team additional depth to their starting rotation, if they feel they need to give one of their starters extra rest. The more likely use of Price down in Tampa Bay will likely be out of the bullpen as either a lefty specialist or as a long reliever.
