Oakland DH and veteran slugger Frank Thomas is officially done for this season. The Big Hurt was transferred from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL with a quad injury that took away his June, July, and September. At 40 years old, Thomas may have a year or two left in the tank, but there is no guarantee he will get picked up by any team for next season.
Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano left Tuesday's game early with soreness and had his arm examined on Wednesday. The test was inconclusive because he did not undergo an MRI, but at the least, he will miss his next start against the Reds on Sunday. The Cubs are currently on top of the NL Central but there is no doubt that Zambrano's presence is needed to make a run in the post-season.
Standing at 5' 9" and weighing in at about 180 pounds, Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has been playing lately like an offensive giant. Pedroia was 3-4 on Wednesday with a 7th inning homerun in a comeback win over the Orioles. Over his last 3 games, Pedroia is 8-13 with 2 home runs and 5 RBIs.
Dodgers 2B Jeff Kent had surgery to remove debris from a cartilage tear in his knee on Tuesday morning and will begin rehab on Wednesday. Kent is hoping to return as early as this month, but this is the 8th DL stint in his 17 year MLB career. Kent will be 41 next March and has not made any official statements about next season, but what is for certain is how badly the Dodgers need him healthy for the final stretch of the regualr season.
A hard collision at the plate with Chase Utley left Nationals catcher Jesus Flores in serious pain on Tuesday night. Flores had to be taken off the field on a stretcher with an ankle injury and was replaced by Will Nieves. Early indications were that Flores would be done for the year, but x-rays revealed no break, only a sprain.
