Throughout this season, the thing that has been lacking for the Yankees has been starting pitching. The main reason has mostly been injuries, but also because of the difficulty the young Yankees pitchers have with the huge expectations. Currently in the rotation is Sidney Ponson, and he could soon be joined by... wait for it... Carl Pavano. This is because Pavano just pitched well when he finished his rehab start
After spending 10 days on the road, the Rays should seemingly be excited to return home. But there's one pretty large factor that might sway the team against coming back to Tampa Bay - Hurricane Fay. The storm is expected to reach land Tuesday, after passing through Cuba Monday. The Rays will likely play the first game of the series versus Anaheim Monday night, but Tuesday's game is "in doubt" because of the storm.
After giving up a four-run lead to the Brewers in the ninth inning, Los Angeles defeated the Wild Card leaders with a ninth inning walk-off home run by Andre Eithier. Eithier hit his blast on a 1-2 count, which plated Matt Kemp for a 7-5 win. The victory propelled the Dodgers into a tie with the Diamondbacks, and the Brewers lost another game to the Cubs, who beat the Marlins with am eight-run seventh inning.
Hideki Matsui, less than one month ago, was thought to need season-ending knee surgery. But Matsui chose to delay the surgery (which he will likely undergo in the off-season) and rehab his knee. The Yankees' left fielder has seen a great deal of progress in that knee over the last month (especially over the last week), which was capped by Sunday's announcement that the former All-Star will return to the Yankees Tuesday in Toronto.
Well that didn't last very long. Braves LHP Tom Glavine was activated from the DL Thursday just in time to give up 7 runs on 7 hits in 4 innings of work. The future Hall-of-Famer has now been sent back to the DL after spending the last two months there, this time with a strained left elbow. At 42 years-of-age, this may very well be the last we see of Glavine. He has nothing left to prove, and his 300 plus wins ranks him among the best pitchers to ever play the game.
